How to get to Castlemaine
By road from regional Victoria
Castlemaine is located on the junction of the Midland and Pyrenees Highways. The Midland Highway connects Ballarat and Bendigo via Daylesford and Castlemaine. The Pyrenees Highway connects Maryborough with Castlemaine via Newstead.
By road from Melbourne
Castlemaine is approximately 120 kilometres north-west of Melbourne: a 90-minute drive from Melbourne city centre. Leave Melbourne via the Tullamarine Freeway and follow the signs to Bendigo and the Calder Freeway: an excellent dual-track road through stunning country. The Freeway has been extended to Ravenswood, north of Harcourt, and you can avoid the narrow, winding road through Chewton by continuing on to Harcourt and coming to Castlemaine that way. Your journey will take the same time. Gardens in Barkers Creek and Sutton Grange are close to the Harcourt exit.
By train from Melbourne
Castlemaine is on the Bendigo railway line and most trains take approximately one-and-a-half hours from Southern Cross station in Melbourne. Timetables and further details are available on the V/Line website. Walking maps will be available at Castlemaine Railway Station for visitors who come by train.
